Did you know there’s a canned food drive every year? Last year the canned food drive’s main competition was between Matt Opitz’s class and Erin Sunday’s class with a surprise takeover by Mark McKinney’s class who won the entire competition.
Senior Lucas Partin said, “There’s usually around 600 cans at a minimum.” With last year’s canned food drive bringing in 300 from one classroom and 150 in two others.
The food gathered goes to the YCAP distribution center in McMinnville and is sent all around the county. The food goes from the YCAP warehouse in Yamhill to McMinnville and then gets sent from one warehouse to another.
There’s a lot of variety for the foods that are accepted, canned foods like corn or green beans but even stuff that lasts a long time like Top Ramen or box Mac And Cheese would be accepted. “You can go to Wilko and you can buy tons of variety,” Said Partin.
The school’s food drive is in partnership with YCAP and has been happening for a few years now. The canned food drive’s winner is chosen by who has the most cans of food (cans per student ratio) and they will win a root beer float party.
For every five cans a student brings in they will have their name entered into a drawing for a 25$ gift card. Can get collected every other day at the end of the period.
