It’s that time of year again. The leaves are orange, red, and brown and are falling to the ground. The air is crisp and fall is officially here. But that also means that one of the favorite holidays of the year is almost here-Thanksgiving. This also raises a huge controversial question- turkey or ham?
Freshman Gabe Pond states, “I think ham is better because it comes from a pig and it’s better than turkey.” Although he chose ham over turkey he said he does like turkey it is just drier than ham. He likes his ham saucy, salty, and a little sweet.
But that is not all that he likes about Thanksgiving dinner. He said “ My favorite Thanksgiving foods are mashed potatoes and my favorite dessert is apple pie.” One of Pond’s favorite parts of Thanksgiving are football, food and family. Pond, when asked if he had the opportunity to change anything he wanted about Thanksgiving he stated, “ I don’t think I’d change anything, I like Thanksgiving.”
When asked which she would rather have turkey or ham sophomore Onaly Tindall replied “ Ham because turkey is so dry and ham has so much more flavor to it,” she stated. Tindall’s favorite part about Thanksgiving is eating and her favorite dish is mashed potatoes. Tindall personally would add presents to Thanksgiving, “I’d probably make it more like a gift giving holiday, really into gifts,” she stated. If Tindall was given the power to get rid of any thanksgiving food she’d choose to get rid of cranberry sauce.
Tindall’s favorite Thanksgiving desserts include cherry pie and cheesecake. When asked why she didn’t like Thanksgiving she replied “ Because there’s no gifts involved, and then you have to eat all this food, and then you’re just so full after then you have to go run it off.” If Thanksgiving wasn’t in wrestling season she’d enjoy it more she said.
But thanksgiving doesn’t look the same for everyone. Oftentimes people travel for thanksgiving whether that is just down the road or to a different state. This year Tindall and her family are going to spend it in a waterpark. Meanwhile senior Kylie Warner is spending it at her grandparents house “which is literally just like 10 steps away,” she said.
One thing that everyone mutually agreed upon was that the food was the best part. Warner’s favorite thanksgiving dish was “ stuffing and mashed potatoes.” While on the other hand junior Addison Tuning’s favorite dish was strictly rolls and butter. When asked about turkey or ham, Warner’s reply was different from the others, “ If turkey is cooked correctly, and you get brown pieces, like darker meat, I think turkey definitely tops because you can have it with mashed potatoes and gravy,” she said. But on the other hand Tuning’s opinion was that ham is the safest route.
Tuning’s least favorite dishes include salad, green bean casserole, mashed potatoes, and anything that’s red. She’s never had cranberry sauce but says its texture is disgusting. Warner also agrees with the dislike of cranberry sauce.
Tuning’s favorite thanksgiving dessert besides rolls and butter, is pie. But not pumpkin pie, because although she’s never had it, she hates it. “My aunt makes some mean pumpkin pie” Warner states, so her favorite is pumpkin pie. Things Tuning does like are apple pie, Marionberry pie, and cookie pie.
If there was anything Tuning could change about Thanksgiving if given the chance she said “ I’d have it where we’re eating fried chicken and mac and cheese.” But she wouldn’t change the season Thanksgiving is in because “ The Mayflower came during this time, and we will support the pilgrims.”
On the other hand, if Warner could change something about Thanksgiving, she’d make it never rain on Thanksgiving, “ Keep it kind of chilly, but never rain.”
