Meet our new teacher from Yamhill-Carlton High school Katrina Jones. She originally moved to Oregon 6 years ago due to her husband’s job for wine making. “I met him in college, in 2010. We met at an art auction,” Katrina Jones said.
Before moving despite not having a teaching certificate she started teaching in 2012 in Washington due to her knowledge in cells and biochemistry from grad school. Jones started teaching 2019 just before the pandemic and ended up having to teach online. “Even though I wanted to be in the classroom, it ended up being fine,” Jones said.
Jones enjoys crocheting and knitting but she does it less frequently now. She loves to swim and exercise although she finds it hard to fit these activities into her busy schedule but overall she loves swimming best. “Swimming is one of my favorite things,” Jones said.
Jones has a huge passion for teaching because she enjoys teaching kids new things. She expresses how much it means to her to teach and connect with the kids. Another woman who devoted her life to helping others was Mother Teresa.
Jones goes on to explain how and why Mother Teresa is her role model and she said that Mother Teresa gives her a new perspective of life. “I can never attain Mother Teresa level, like goodness,” Jones said.
This year Jones is teaching three classes, Physical Science, Food Science and Chemistry.
Unlike other teachers, she has two different systems of grading for her three classes. Standard base is for physical science, that is if students are reaching the learning target and or are they exceeding it. Exceeding it is having about 100% while having about a C means students are meeting the goal.
While in food science and chemistry they are more traditional meaning they are point based.
“I am learning new things in science everyday,” 9th grader Evan Rodriguez says. He explains that in physical science he has learned a lot and is excited to learn more.
