With a score of 99.5, Yamhill Carlton’s competitive cheer team won the Oregon state competition.
“Last year’s state was amazing, there was so much energy and it was just an awesome experience,” Junior Josie Barker said. Even though their rival is Santain Christian, they beat them by 2 points.
Kristen Regalado coached these girls of 8 with Kelly and Kaylee Williams. The competition was a 2 day thing although our team competed for one.
Many sports may feel like a way to get an escape from the house or even school “It’s like an escape from school” Sophomore Addie Faulkner says.
This year the cheer team has 10 girls. “I think it’s going to be a great year and a lot of talent with this group of girls,” Barker Said.
A lot of the girls this year have a ton of potential Faulkner states. This year they have a good chance for state again!
A reason to join this amazing cheer team is because they have so much potential as a team and stand out. This is a great team with a great bond.
Last year’s team had 8 athletes being Addie Faulkner, Keilee Owens, Josie Barker, Kiley Williams, Claire Walton, Madeline Allen, Mackenzie Brooks, and Tiearra Braithwaite. This team qualified for academic all state.
Barker was a tumbler and pyramid flier. A pyramid flier is an athlete who is lifted into the air during a stunt or pyramid. This requires a high level of flexibility.
Being a tumbler means to perform different types of flips and rolls. This means to be flexible, fast, long stamina, and disciplined.
Faulkner was a side base, being a side base is to help the flier into the air and support their foot. To be a base you have to work with the ones next to you to make sure the flier will be safe while in the air. “The challenging stunts and learning new stunts is my favorite part,” Faulkner said.
