Transitioning from the dome to the main building, Cameron Basinger enters his new domain as a social studies teacher. Although loved as a science teacher, he now feels more confident in his new position.
“I feel like I’m doing much better now. So it works out a lot better for everybody.”
Before Basinger became a full time teacher, he substituted at YC for half a year. He chose to teach science for a year instead of continuing to sub, even though it isn’t his specialty. After his first year teaching full time, a social studies position opened and he took his chance.
Although Basinger loves science, what he really loved in school was government, econ, and psychology.
“I always said that teaching science was like trying to speak a different language, and it’s a language I don’t understand as much as I love it.”
Basinger thinks that a lot of the history we focus on in school is about the United States, and he appreciates how his Global Studies class gives a look outside of it. He believes it’s important to look outside of where we are right now.
“We’re studying the world. We’re not just studying the little piece of the world that we see every day,” Basinger says.
Prior to his job as a science teacher, Basinger didn’t have much experience with some of the tools in his classes, such as bunsen burners. He says he hated it then, but he misses it now because it made things exciting.
“And so there’s a lot of times, like, well we might blow up today, we might ingest some poisonous chemical. And, you know, no more Mr. B.”
Basinger believes that things are getting easier as he’s getting back into the history frame of mind. He’s looking forward to things because they’re just getting better and better.
“Science was a whole different language for me, and so now I’m back where I am.”
In the near future his classes will have some tests. He wants to have some procedures with court ruling and demonstrations of how voting works in his government class.
Basinger loves the new view from his classroom, which is the first door to the right of Mr. McKinney’s room on the main floor. Not only does he love the large windows, but he also likes how much smaller the classroom itself is.
“You know, this room is smaller too… I feel like I’m closer to everybody.”
He has plans to decorate his room, and he’s working on filling it up. He’s a big collector, so he’s hoping to move some of his collection into his room. He’s always willing to accept art, assignments, or other decorations from students, so if you want to help Mr.B decorate his room, he’d really appreciate it!
Basinger likes to decorate for holidays. He kept the art from the door decoration contest last year for a long time because he loved how it looked and it filled up space. Rest assured his room will be decorated for occasions.
“Halloween is coming up. We’ll get something spooky in here.”
Just to clear the air, Mr. B does not have a curly hair routine. His beautiful curls are all natural!
