The timeless Christmas movie A Christmas Story is a classic for families everywhere during the holiday season. The hilarious, realistic nature of the movie makes for a good laugh and is suitable for all ages. Released in 1983, the movie is known for its long history of being a favorite holiday movie and for its famous line, “You’ll shoot your eye out!”
The movie follows the story of a young boy named Ralphie Parker (Peter Billingsley) as he spends his holiday season wishing for his dream present, a “Red Ryder air rifle” and fending off his bullies. With Christmas approaching fast, Ralphie has to prove to everyone that he is mature enough for a carbine-action air rifle, and that includes his grumpy father and concerned mother.
A Christmas Story has connected with countless families worldwide since its release due to its Christmas take on bad luck, disappointment, realism, and satire. Most Christmas movies were sweet with happy endings (and often romance), and A Christmas Story brought a hilarious new take. This is most often the opinion of why it’s one of the most popular Christmas movies in the world.
The movie retains its popularity throughout the years with its countless popular quotes, scenes, and references. Some you may know include the quote, “I triple dog dare you”, the iconic leg lamp, and the tongue on the frozen flagpole scene.
A review from Screen Rant on the movie says, “A Christmas Story reigns over its sequel with Rotten Tomatoes scores of 89% by both critics and audiences, dozens of award nominations, and the bragging rights of being selected for the US National Film Registry for its contribution to entertainment.”
I loved the movie A Christmas Story and its fun, different take on Christmas. I enjoyed the constant humor and sarcasm and the battles between Ralphie and the neighborhood bullies. I honestly don’t have any critiques either; it makes sense that it’s popular! I’d give this movie 5 out of 5 stars and I would definitely recommend it to any families looking for a fun Christmas movie to watch with kids.
