Halloween is a highly debated topic posing the question, should there be an age limit or should their not be one for trick or treating. 

In Chesapeake,Virginia, there is a law that states kids who are 13 years old or older are not legally allowed to trick or treat. 

In addition to that law, as posted in a recent article from City Lab by Claire Tran and reporter Nicole Javorsky, “The result was a trick-or-treating ordinance that punishes trick-or-treating over the age of 12 (unless a person is supervising a younger child) or after 8 p.m. as a misdemeanor, with a fine of up to $500. … Even the town where candy corn originated—Belleville, Illinois—bans anyone over 12 from trick-or-treating.”

A recent Instagram poll conducted by YC Journal staff asking what age should you stop trick or treating, 1 person said leaving elementary school, 2 said leaving middle school, 9 said 18 years old and 23 people said there shouldn’t be an age limit. All voters were between the ages of 13 and 19 years old. 

Middle school teacher and mother of two middle schoolers Lisa Jacobs said If you have bad intentions you need to find something else to do, but if you are just out to have fun and enjoy the night it doesn’t matter how old you are as long as you are respectful.

Freshman Kaylee Williams said, “I think that they should stop trick or treating according to their maturity and how they feel towards the subject. I don’t really believe in a set age for that.”

Junior Felicia Robins said, “I am trick-or-treating this year, but with my younger siblings. I think trick-or-treating is fun, I think if you are 18 and you still wanna dress up and go door to door that’s fine, but after 18 you shouldn’t be able to.”
