Yamhill-Carlton NHS students sponsored a blood drive Tuesday May, 21st. There was 36 units of blood donated. This blood drive had 20 first time donors with a total of 42 donors.

It is said that 4.5 million Americans would die each  year without lifesaving blood transfusions. Close to 32,000 pints of blood are used each day in the US.  It is also super important for those with rare blood types to donate, due to the lack of that blood type. The most rare blood types are, AB-negative (.6 percent),B-negative (1.5 percent), AB-positive (3.4 percent),A-negative (6.3 percent), O-negative (6.6 percent), B-positive (8.5 percent), A-positive (35.7 percent), and  O-positive (37.4 percent).

Sophomore, Cristin Brethower said, “I am healthy right now, and it is a relatively easy way to help people.”

Sophomore, Kassidy Ashby said, “It helps save lives.”

Givingblood.org says it is important to donate blood because of these five reasons;

• Blood is needed every two seconds.
• About one in seven people entering a hospital needs blood.
• Blood is always needed for treatment of accident victims, cancer patients, hemophiliacs and surgery patients.
• Blood cannot be manufactured.
• Only 37 percent of our country’s population is eligible to give blood, and less than 10 percent of those who can donate actually do donate annually
